What will Lance’s legacy be? Bobby says “Lance Armstrong is the most dedicated rider I ever met. His legacy will be the attention to every single detail, his professionalism and focus on one race. He’s changed cycling in the sense that now you are forced to concentrate fully on one single event. When we started, I saw Lance mainly as a rival. Now I’m one of his biggest fans.” Full article …
Congratulations to Bobby on finishing the Tour de France for the seventh time! Among Americans, Bobby is now tied with Tyler Hamilton for Tour finishes, with only Frankie Andreu (9), George Hincapie (9), Lance Armstrong (8), and Andy Hampsten (8) having finished this great race more times. Team CSC had a great Tour with David Zabriskie and Jens Voigt wearing the yellow jersey, and Ivan Basso finished 2nd overall.
It is hard to believe this is the last race for Lance. These past seven years have gone by so fast. Next year the Tour will take on a very different feel without him. There are already a lot of articles contemplating who will be the next great American cyclist. With so many Americans doing well in this years Tour, it could be a matter of many Americans having various levels of success from stage wins, to high G.C. finishes. Bobby gives a lot of quotes in this article: Tour seeks new boss, fluent English an advantage.
Bobby’s next race will be the LUK Challenge Chrono Bühl, a two-man team time trial where he will team up with Jens Voigt. Bobby and Jens won this event last year. After that he is scheduled to start the Benelux Tour, a Pro Tour event in Belgium. Bobby is 16th in the Pro Tour standings after the Tour de France.
Bobby rode a great final time trial of the Tour to finish 4th, and match his placing in last year’s final time trial stage. Only Lance, Ullrich, and Vino were able to go faster. It looks like Bobby will finish the Tour in 17th place overall, to match his second best ever G.C. finish in 1997.
A lot has happened since the last site update. Over the final week, Bobby attempted to get into a breakaway, but he was a little to high on G.C. for the other teams to let him go. He did manage to go over one climb first on stage 17, but his priority was working for Ivan Basso who will finish 2nd in Paris.
In some great news for the team, CSC has extended their sponsorship through 2009, and they has also signed Basso through that period. The team has also exended the contracts of Nicki Sørensen, Kurt-Asle Arvesen, and Giovanni Lombardi for a further two years, and signed Fabian Cancellara from Fassa Bortola for three years. Bobby’s current contract runs through the end of 2006.

Today Bobby finished 4th on stage 11 that was won by Alexander Vinokourov. Jens Voigt was eliminated for missing the time cut after being ill for the past couple of days. Stage 12 could be a good day for another breakway.
Stage 10 featured the first summit finish of the Tour, and Bobby had his first off day, finishing with Vino at 5:18 behind stage winner Alejandro Valverde. Ivan Basso was 5th on the stage and moved up the 3rd on G.C.
Jens Voigt finished 3rd on stage 9 after getting in a breakaway, and took the yellow jersey again for CSC! Bobby was 6th on GC following the stage. David Zabriskie, still feeling the effects of crashing, dropped out of the Tour.
Stage 8 was the first stage with any serious hills, and Bobby looked good on the final climb, attacking just over the top with Cadel Evans, but they were quickly brought back and finished with the main group with Armstrong and the rest of the GC contenders, 27 seconds behind Pieter Weening, and Andreas Klöden.
Bobby was active in stage 6 yesterday, getting into a breakaway 10 km into the stage with George Hincapie, but the peloton wasn’t about to let the 2nd, and 4th place riders on GC gain any more time, and brought them back. Bobby was again visible leading the peloton over the final Cat 4 climb of the day, and then was lucky to avoid the big crash at 500 meters to the finish to place 16th on the stage.
Today’s stage 7 saw more rain and crashes. It ended in another sprint with Robbie McEwen taking his second stage win. Bobby is in 5th place overall as the race heads into the mountains tomorrow with a Cat 2 climb coming about 15 km from the finish.

It was a heart breaking stage 4 Team Time Trial for Team CSC, coming up 2 seconds short of the stage win with Dave Z crashing with 1.5 km to go. On the bright side, losing by 2 seconds is better than being minutes back! Bobby is now in 4th place on GC, and CSC’s leader Ivan Basso is still close to the lead in 10th place, just 1:26 behind.

Stage 5 was another stage for the sprinters. Team CSC had some problems with crashes, but in the end they all finished safely in the pack and Dave Z looks like he will be o.k. Stage 6 could favor a breakaway.
A great Tour de France start for Team CSC with David Zabriskie scorching the stage one time trial to set a record for the highest average speed for a time trial stage in the history for the Tour, bettering Greg LeMond’s record from the final time trial in 1989. Bobby was quoted as saying “We just witnessed the birth of a real champion for the time trial event. He just creamed everybody.” Bobby had a nice performance with a 11th place finish, one spot in front of Jan Ullrich who was passed by Lance Armstrong. Team CSC is now leading the Team classification, and it will be important to hold that in order to start last in the Team Time Trial in a few days. Stage 2 could be dangerous, with expected crosswind as the route follows the coast.
