Levi Leipheimer had one of the best time trials of his career to beat Jens Voigt in stage 5 of the Amgen Tour of California. Bobby finished 6th on the stage and moved into 4th overall. Team CSC riders took 5 of the top 8 positions in the time trial.

PezCylingNews: Stage 5 Report
The current Olympic and World Champion Paulo Bettini has won stage 4 of the Tour of California. If a CSC rider couldn’t win, then it is pretty special to see the World Champion winning a race in the United States. Here is a photo from Mark Shimahara of Bobby in the rain …

CyclingNews.com is reporting that the UCI has told ProTour teams they may not compete in Paris-Nice. Because of an ongoing fued between the UCI and the ASO (organizers of the Tour de France and Paris-Nice) the race organizers changed the status to an “open” event, meaning that ProTour team would not be able to compete.
This would really be sad if Bobby had to miss Paris-Nice in what possibly could be he final year as a pro.
Jens Voigt put in an amazing ride on stage 3 of the Tour of California to win the stage and move up to 2nd overall. Bobby finished in a group just 4 seconds behind and is now 24 seconds behind on GC … still within striking distance for with the time trial still to come.

Read the latest news from Team CSC: Julich: Back to Basics
Bobby Julich is going back to basics in 2007 and is planning on following the same program, which has brought him success in previous years with Team CSC, after the 2006 season was ruined by his crash in Tour de France. This means among other things that Julich wont be doing Giro d’Italia.
This is one of the things, which Julich explains in the most recent video interview on the Team CSC Official Fan Club web site, where he also talks about the new riders on the team and some of the thoughts, he has had during the long break following the crash and after having had another child this winter.
Julich is still not sure, whether he will be riding in 2008, but it is not impossible because as he explains, he wants to try and qualify for the American Olympic Team in 2008 – or alternatively if this turns out to be his final year as a pro rider, he would like to go out with a bang – and his main goal for 2007 is:
“A time trial medal at the World Championships!”
If you are a member you can see the entire interview on the fan club site, where you can also see the brand new interview with Christian Vande Velde, who talks a bit about the survival camp in South Africa, his program for 2007, London as the starting city in Tour de France as well as other things.

Of course you can also see last week’s interviews with Carlos Sastre, Bjarne Riis and Tuesday’s Tour of California stage winner, JJ Haedo.
It was a great stage win for CSC’s J.J. Haedo after a great leadout from Stuart O’Grady. Bobby and the rest of team CSC were very active at the front of the peloton as the race entered Sacramento.

Landis, Arnold watch Haedo win Stage 2
A year ago, Reno’s resident cycling star Bobby Julich told the press that the only North American pro rider who looked ready for the ProTour at the Tour of California was J.J. Haedo. On Tuesday in Sacramento, Haedo, the Argentinean CSC rider, won the 116- mile second stage of the Amgen Tour of California in Sacramento in front of another massive, roaring crowd which included some famous spectators such as California Gov. Schwarzzeneger and embattled Tour de France champion Floyd Landis.

Bobby finished 22nd in the Prologue of the Tour of California. Levi Leipheimer was the last rider to start and just beat out first year Pro Jason Donald of Team Slipstream by one second. Donald was riding for amateur team Einstein’s Bagels last year … a team that both Leiphiemer and Zabriskie rode for as amateurs.
Check for photos tagged with “tourofcalifornia” on Flickr.com for many photos including this one of Bobby by kwc.

Note: Jason Donald was such an unknown, that Phil Liggett was questioning if the time was correct on the second placed rookie. A Google search on Jason Donald revealed that as a collegiate runner in Colorado, he finished a close second at nationals in the steeplechase, and he was an All American for the indoor mile.

CSC will be providing technology to the Tour of California that will allow fans to see where riders are on the route using GPS data
Wired magazine has the details. Bobby is qouted in the story …
I think it’s going to be really great for the fans to help them understand what we do,” he says. “The audience right now is always craving more information, and this is going to fill that void perfectly.”

Team CSC will bring a strong team to the Amgen Tour of California. The team will be Fabian Cancellara, Juan José Haedo, Bobby, Karsten Kroon, Stuart O’Grady, Christian Vande Velde, Jens Voigt, and David Zabriskie. That looks like a pretty good team considering there are two time trials. New sprint specialist J.J. Haedo has to be smiling ear to ear thinking about the that leadout train! Velonews also has a preview.
The Versus television network (formerly OLN) will have daily coverage. Click here for the schedule.
Olympic Team Selection Procedures Announced
If Bobby is thinking about trying to make the Olympics again in 2008, USA Cycling recently announced the qualifying procedures.

HorsCategorie.net has posted more photos from the Team CSC Training Camp in California.
Bobby sent an email to update us after the first few days of training camp …
We are training in Gilroy, California and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with how good the training is in this area. We have been blessed so far with great weather, but this week seems to have a lot of rain in the forecast. I had a hard time training in the cold weather that we were having in the Reno/Tahoe area through mid January, so as long as it remains in the 50-60’s I will be happy no matter what.
Bjarne gave all of us more time to get adjusted to the time change (and in my case being back at sea level) so all the guys are now ready to train hard. We just completed the first 3 day block (with 2 six hour days followed by an intense four hour ride yesterday) and all the guys look great. Today is a rest day where we had a 2 hour inside exercise session followed by some bike handling exercises at a local baseball field. It was not the typical rest day, but fun none the less. Tomorrow it is back to business with the start of another 3 day block.
After the camp is finished 8 of us will head to the Tour of California and the rest of the guys will head back to Europe for the start of our European campaign. After a long time away from the team I am happy to be back within the team structure and am looking forward to a great season.
I will do the Tour of California, then head back for Paris-Nice, Criterium International, Pays Basque, the Ardennes Classics, and then the Tour of Romandie before having a break before the build up for the Tour de France. We have many goals for the season and by the way the guys look here in training camp, I am sure that we are going to have another successful season!
-Bobby
We also found some great photos from Greg Parks.
Bobby and Team CSC are currently training in California. Photos from training camp are in the Team CSC Gallery page

The Team CSC kit for 2007 has a similar look as 2006, but with a little more red.
